Each instrument page has reference notes you can play for every string, plus tuning tips.

How the chromatic tuner works

A chromatic tuner recognises all 12 notes, so it works for any instrument, any tuning and your voice. Press Start tuner, allow the microphone, and play a single note. The display shows the nearest note and how many cents sharp or flat you are. 100 cents make one semitone. Within 5 cents counts as in tune and turns the display green.

Reference pitch

The default is A4 = 440 Hz, the modern standard. Change it between 415 and 466 Hz to match an orchestra (441 or 442 Hz) or baroque pitch (415 Hz).

Frequently asked questions

Is this online tuner free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no app to install.

Does the tuner record my audio?

No. Pitch detection happens inside your browser. No sound is uploaded or stored.

Why does the tuner not detect my note?

Play one note at a time, close to the microphone, in a quiet room. Very low notes (below about 40 Hz) are hard for small microphones to hear; use a harmonic an octave higher.
